20-year-old Golf costs as much as 2 new ones

Admittedly, it's an old Volkswagen Golf. In fact, it's now more than 20 years old. But it's not just any old Golf.

A Volkswagen Golf R32 from 2003, a car that is more than 20 years old, has been sold for a price equivalent to two brand new Golf models.

The rare car sat at a dealer for 16 years before it found a new owner. With only 15 kilometers on the clock, it was sold for approximately 750,000 Danish kroner.

The price is remarkable, as it is more than double the price of a brand new Golf R from 2023 when it comes from the factory. Such a model costs from approximately 360,000 Danish kroner excluding taxes.

The Golf R32 marked the start of Volkswagen's successful Golf R model series. The model series recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special anniversary model.

The blue Golf R32 is equipped with a 3.2-liter VR6 engine that produces 240 horsepower. The engine is coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive. But did you know that the DSG transmission, which has since become standard in the Golf series, was actually developed specifically for the R32?

The car differs from a standard Golf in a number of important ways. It has unique bumpers, side skirts and dual exhaust pipes. The cabin is equipped with sports seats in black leather.

The specific example sold was painted in Deep Blue Pearl, one of the standard colors when the car was introduced.

The sale took place via an auction at Bring a Trailer. The high price reflects the car's rarity and its status as a collector's item.

In comparison, a new Golf R from 2023 has a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 320 horsepower. The question is, what do you as a driver prefer?

Even though the new R model has more horsepower, the old R32 with its VR6 engine, an engine that Volkswagen finally put in the grave shortly before the New Year, is now something very special. Read more about it here .
