Toyota is accused of opposing electric cars

Toyota has long been skeptical of electric cars. Now a new report accuses the Japanese brand of standing in the way of electric cars.

In a new report, the climate activist lobby group Influencemap reaches out to a large number of car brands.

The organisation, which has its headquarters in London, does not believe that the car brands are doing enough for the climate. And here Toyota is therefore among the worst. In fact, the Japanese brand is the worst, says the critic.

According to the report, Toyota is the car brand that is doing absolutely the least to convert car production to consist exclusively of electric cars.

When it comes to the range of electric cars, only Suzuki and Honda are worse than Toyota, Influencemap believes.

The report itself is based on how the various car brands, through lobbying work, work for or against the various measures to limit the general emission of CO2 from the car industry.

At the top of the list – i.e. best placed – is Tesla, because in 2030 the brand still has no plans for anything other than building electric cars. After that comes Mercedes, because the Germans' model program in the new decade will consist of 71 percent electric cars.

In third place, the British lobby group has placed BMW, because it believes that the Germans will have filled the model program with 69 percent electric cars by 2030. However, the reality can look quite different. Read more about it here.

On the other hand, Toyota insists that electric cars – i.e. those with a cable – are not the only solution when it comes to future transport options.

In fact, the Japanese insist on technological openness. We find a similar attitude at Volvo Trucks, which is now experimenting with trucks that burn hydrogen.
