Minister wants to lift petrol ban: "We don't have to decide"

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner wants to have the EU's ban on the internal combustion engine lifted. Politicians should not decide what motorists should wear.

With a ban on petrol and diesel cars, the EU risks standing in the way of technological development.

Germany's Finance Minister Christian Lindner is so clear in his approach. The minister also does not believe that politicians should interfere in what motorists are doing.

Therefore, Lindner will now go after the ban, which the EU voted through last time, scrapped completely again. It is better with technological openness, goes the argument.

– Despite opposition from the EU Commission, we managed to get an exception from the combustion ban if cars are powered by synthetic fuels.

– But we need to go further than that and focus on openness towards technological development, says the finance minister in an interview with the German newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine .

Christian Lindner also claims that it is not only electric cars that can fascinate and at the same time contribute to a green transition. There are other alternatives. Equally important is that it is the consumers and the demand that control the market.

– We have agreed that climate-friendly fuels must be treated in the same way in terms of taxation as electric mobility.

– The bill on legislative changes is ready for a vote in Germany. I hope that it will send a signal to the industry that the federal government is serious about technological freedom, concludes Christian Lindner.

The Minister of Finance is not the only one who has spoken out about the ban on the internal combustion engine since the EU succeeded in getting it adopted. A former member of BMW's board believes that the EU Parliament will change its mind by 2026 at the latest. Read more about it here .
