Here at home you can still get a Fiat 500 with a petrol engine. But this is certainly not the case everywhere. And that suggests something that Fiat regrets.
The fact that the EU has relaxed the requirements for new cars with a combustion engine by basically continuing the current Euro norm has given car brands some breathing room.
The same is the case in the USA, where the government has backed out of a series of outrageous demands for new petrol and diesel cars, and Fiat now wants to profit from that. So maybe.
That's what Automotive News Europe writes.
According to the media, the brand has contacted a number of suppliers to inquire about the possibilities of building a car with a combustion engine on the basis of what is actually an electric car, namely the Fiat 500e.

However, Fiat did not want to comment on the story. But it opens up the possibility of producing a number of low-cost cars with internal combustion engines, while the production of electric cars is adjusted accordingly.
Whether this means cheaper electric cars, now that car brands have had more time to lobby, is not known. At Mercedes, for example, they acknowledged back in March that it will take years for the electric car to compete with the fossil car.
And if they really are backing out of plans for electric cars, Fiat isn't the only brand that thinks so. At Porsche, it is rumored that they will take the V8 engine with them into the new decade.
Toyota does not believe that it makes sense to only build electric cars. And at BMW, they don't even want to put a date on when it's over with the internal combustion engine.
Conversely, Swedish-Chinese Volvo announced last week that it has definitively put the diesel car in the grave. You can see and read more about that car right here .
