It was only a few days ago that a huge gas station in Sweden had to turn around in bankruptcy. Experts expect one in three stations to be gone in 10 years.
When a large Swedish Q8 tank went bankrupt earlier this month, the company's director Thomas Andersson made a grim prediction.
Namely that the last new gas station has already been built in Sweden. And now there is even more bad news coming from that side.
For every third – that is, just over 1,000 – of Sweden's total of 3,000 gas stations may be closed down in just 10 years. This is the warning from the organization Sweden's Service Stations, according to TV4 .
In a country the size of Sweden, the closures that the industry expects will be especially hard on the sparsely populated areas, where there is a long way to and between most things.

– Since many of these smaller stations will be shut down, Sweden's crisis and war preparedness will also deteriorate. It must also be seen in the context of the fact that we are now members of NATO, says the organisation's director Robert Dimmlich to Vi Bilägare.
The announcement comes after two more gas stations in Sweden have had to turn around. One explanation could be that fewer and fewer cars naturally do not stop to refuel as the electric car enters the market. At least not as gas stations are used to.
Having said that, there is currently a sharp slowdown in the advance of the electric car. When you look at car sales in Scandinavia, it was actually only in Denmark that car sales went forward.
A decline can also be traced in much larger markets. Ever since the German government withdrew public support for electric cars in December 2023 to plug a hole in the state coffers, interest in the car type has plummeted.
Most recently, sales have fallen by 31 percent. While both the hybrids as well as the pure diesel and petrol cars have experienced progress. Read more about it here .
The trend that the Swedes fear has not yet reached Denmark. In fact, the Danish chain of gas stations, the Go On group, is only betting on opening even more unmanned stations. At the same time, the director calls 'the rumor about the death of the petrol car greatly exaggerated'.
