They don't bother with Tesla – sold 1 car in the whole of January

The South Koreans have turned on a plate in relation to Tesla, which was the best-selling electric car brand in the country throughout 2023.

From being the best-selling electric car brand in the whole of South Korea in 2023, Tesla can note that in the first month of 2024 it has sold only one car in the country.

And there are a number of explanations for this. The South Koreans are, among other things, concerned about the level of safety in Tesla's cars. The price is something else that makes drivers stay again.

And then there is simply a lack of proper infrastructure in the otherwise technology-obsessed country. Bloomberg writes that.

According to the media, Tesla sold only one Model Y in January. This appears from figures from the South Korean Ministry of Commerce.

It is the worst month for Tesla in South Korea since July 2022. No cars were sold here in the country.

However, Tesla is not the only car brand lagging behind in South Korea. Sales of electric cars fell by as much as 80 percent in January.

– Automakers face less enthusiasm for electric cars in South Korea as higher interest rates and inflation hold back consumers. Concerns about burning batteries and a lack of fast chargers are also dampening demand, writes Bloomberg.

A fifth factor behind South Koreans' less desire for electric cars is that many are waiting for the South Korean government to announce whether they wish to support electric cars financially or not.

In other words, in the style of the tax debate here at home, which has a great influence on buyers' desire for electric cars. Something that can also be seen in Germany, where the government dropped support for electric cars last year. Read more about it here .
