The legendary Ford Capri is revived as an electric car

The upcoming Capri, which Ford is expected to unveil on July 10 this year, will be built on the same technology as the Volkswagen ID.4.

Ford already has one model car based on Volkswagen's technology. But now the Explorer, which is technically identical to the ID.4, is getting a sibling.

There are many indications that Ford will unveil a 'new' crossover on July 10 – that is, in less than a month. It will be built on the Volkswagen electric car platform, MEB.

The same technology as the Explorer and Volkswagen ID.4 is used. Ford will call the new car Capri. The brand hasn't had one like this since the model disappeared in December 1986.

It was there to build a 'Mustang-inspired' coupe for Ford's European audience. But when the Capri name makes a comeback after 38 years, it will be far from the same forms.

That's what Automotive News writes.

However, Ford, which has just lost one of its highest-ranking European managers to Volkswagen, has neither confirmed the name of the new car nor the launch date.

The last time Ford in Europe had a Capri in the model range, the market branded the model as 'the car you always promised yourself'. Whether the same will be the case now is still too early to say.

Conversely, the Capri was a gigantic success for Ford. The brand managed to sell almost 2 million copies of the model across three generations between 1968 and 1986.

The last Ford Capri – that is, until now – was car number 1,886,647. It was/is right-hand drive, had a 2.8-liter V6 engine, manual transmission, and was built at Ford's factory in Cologne, Germany.

The car exists to this day, where it is looked after and cared for as part of the Ford England fleet. English Pistonheads have a short tour of the car, and the article is, for those who might be curious, very easy to find.

However, not all car brands, like Ford, think it's cool to find model names out of the cache. For example, Lamborghini already promised in 2022 that this kind of thing is over. Read more about it here .
