Electricity for electric cars is now as expensive as gasoline

Electricity for electric cars is now as expensive as gasoline. Especially if you use fast chargers on longer trips. This is revealed by a new Swedish test.

The Norwegians said it already in 2023. And now the Swedes are agreeing; electricity for electric cars is as expensive as gasoline.

We Car Owners writes.

– Fast charging is essentially as expensive as filling up a petrol or diesel car, our winter test shows, says the people behind the test.

Right now, a liter of gasoline in Sweden costs around 11 Danish kroner. And even though it's the second cheapest liter price in Europe, Swedes in electric cars shouldn't expect to be able to refuel cheaper. Quite the opposite.

But the Norwegians actually already came to the same result in April 2024 during a similar test. In any case, the price of diesel in Norway is comparable to the electricity from the charging stations.

Gasoline and electricity for electric cars are now equally expensive

– With the current charging price, charging an electric car is just as expensive as refueling a diesel car.

This is what Nils Sodal, senior communications advisor at the Norwegian NAF, says in a press release.

The price, the Norwegians say, is on the expensive side if you choose to connect the electric car to a fast charger. In connection with the Norwegian test, the calculation is not wrong.

A year ago, it cost 6.5 Norwegian kroner per kilowatt-hour to connect an electric car to a fast charger in Norway. This corresponds to 4.13 Danish kroner.

For a car that drives 1,000 kilometers per month with a consumption of 0.2 kilowatt-hours per kilometer, this means a 'fuel cost' of 1,289 Norwegian kroner.

The equivalent diesel car will cost 1,320 Norwegian kroner in fuel alone to keep running for the same period. This corresponds to 836 kroner in Denmark.

Another thing is that electric cars can result in very expensive garage bills. Just something like tires can be twice as expensive to purchase for an electric car.

And in some electric cars, the battery packs are designed so that they cannot be disassembled for repair at the cell level. This means that the entire battery pack must be replaced. Read more about this here .
