Denmark refuses to pay DKK 3.5 million. kroner in special car stands

Denmark pays neither environmental zone fees nor fines when diplomats ignore rules. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms this in an email to Boosted.

Denmark is not the country that owes the most in environmental zone taxes in London. That 'honour' goes to the Americans, whose embassy has unpaid environmental zone charges of more than 14 million British pounds.

But like the Americans, official Denmark refuses to pay the English when the diplomats flout the rules.

This is confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press service in an email reply to the Boosted editorial staff.

And although both the city council in London and the government of England claim that they will persecute the countries that do not pay the taxes, this does not change the Danish decision.

In fact, writes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the English were already informed in 2007 that Denmark refuses to pay the environmental zone taxes. This is due to rules that the diplomats can cover themselves under.

"Denmark, together with a majority of EU countries and the USA, has assessed that the Congestion Charge constitutes taxation from which diplomats are exempted according to the Vienna Convention," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states in an email to Boosted.dk.

Conversely, it is not only Danish diplomats who behave badly in traffic in other countries. It also happens to foreign diplomats here at home.

For example, Ekstra Bladet has been able to uncover how a Danish driver employed by the South African embassy can completely turn off the ignition in a blue BMW without the police being able to come after him. Read more about it here.

How much Denmark, and other countries with diplomatic relations in England, owe the English in environmental zone taxes can be seen on this list from the Transport Agency in London – Transport For London.
