Confirms: Kevin Magnussen wants to return to Formula 1

Danish Kevin Magnussen will make his final Formula 1 race in December 2024. But now the racing team's former boss, Günter Steiner, confirms that K-Mag wants to return.

Former Haas team principal Günter Steiner has now confirmed that Kevin Magnussen is planning to return to Formula 1.

Both Steiner and Kevin Magnussen previously worked together in Formula 1 at the Haas team. But both are now out of the sport.

Günter Steiner was fired as team principal in 2023, and Magnussen did not have his contract extended last season. Most recently, Haas has chosen to bet on Esteban Ocon, who was fired by Alpine earlier in the season.

Since his retirement from Formula 1, the Danish racing driver has competed in endurance races in the WEC series. He is currently the factory driver for the BMW M Motorsport team in the Hypercar class in both the IMSA Sportscar Championship and the World Endurance Championship.

Steiner, however, reveals that he has recently heard from Kevin Magnussen. And that the Dane may have another Formula 1 comeback in mind.

Kevin Magnussen has asked for a very specific phone number.

Steiner tells this in the podcast " Red Flags ".

– He (Kevin Magnussen, ed.) sent me a text message two or three weeks ago. He wanted a phone number for one of the team managers (in Formula 1, ed.)

"I don't know what he's going to use it for, but that was the last text message he sent me," the 59-year-old said.

Even if Kevin Magnussen wants to find a way back to Formula 1, the text message to his former boss seems unusual.

Normally, the choirs use agents to contact potential employers among the soon-to-be 11 Formula 1 teams. But as Steiner has previously said, the Danish racing choir is negotiating on its own. The same has been confirmed by Kevin Magnussen.

Steiner has not revealed much about what he spoke to K-Mag about, so it is unclear which team manager Magnussen has in mind.

However, there is already speculation that it could be Graeme Lowdon. Lowdon served as team principal for Virgin and Marussia in Formula 1 between 2010 and 2015.

And already last year it was announced that Lowdon would return in 2024 as team principal for the newest team on the grid, namely Cadillac from the 2026 season.

After a lengthy negotiation with the FIA and the other Formula 1 constructors, General Motors has been granted access to the starting grid with the Cadillac project.

The American team has not yet announced its choirs. But even before the team was formally approved, it was clear that the Americans are looking for a combination of the very young and the more experienced choirs.

Several drivers such as Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo have been mentioned in connection with the two vacant seats.

Kevin Magnussen could also be an obvious candidate for the team. Especially when you consider that the Dane spent almost 10 years in the field. And in fact, K-Mag has been linked with Cadillac in Formula 1 several times. Read more about it here .
