Citroën changes its mind – 2CV is resurrected after all

First they wanted to, then the media misunderstood something. And now Citroën wants to build a new 2CV anyway, says the brand's managing director.

The Citroën 2CV is set to be revived. The French automaker has reversed its previous stance and is now planning to produce an electric version of the iconic 2CV model.

"We have a heritage to look back on, but now we want our iconic models to carry us into the future," Citroën CEO Thierry Koskas told the Daily Mail .

An announcement that came in connection with the British launch of their new e-C3 model.

Originally launched in 1948, the Citroën 2CV was a low-cost car designed for post-war Europe. It nevertheless achieved great popularity and was produced until 1990.

The car also received several nicknames in several countries. Now Citroën is planning to revive the model as an electric car.

The 2CV is resurrected because Citroën is jealous of Renault

It is expected that the new Citroën 2CV could be on the market as early as 2027. At least if you believe the managing director Thierry Koskas. He has recently rejected the idea of a new 2CV.

The decision to get serious about a new 2CV comes after Citroën previously denied rumors of a revival of the model.

It has reportedly put pressure on Citroën management that Renault is successful with their revival of the 5 model, which is now also an electric car.

"You can go anywhere in the world and you will meet someone who is interested in and likes the 2CV," says Thierry Koskas.

The news of the upcoming electric car has generated a lot of attention. Koskas has emphasized that plans for retro-designed models have been underway for a long time.

– We have long planned retro-designed models. But we are not going to revive all models from our historical catalog, says the director.

There is speculation that, in addition to the electric 2CV, Citroën is also considering producing a retro version of another equally well-known model – namely the DS.

The Citroën 2CV was originally a simple and practical car. Whether the brand today – or rather in 2027 – can capture the same spirit, time will tell.

But if it is successful, there is reason to believe that production will be able to run for a very long time. Renault, for example, plans to only update the innards of the electric Renault 5. The design will remain the same for years.
